“How historical markers can remember, and manipulate, the past”
On the eastern edge of 86 acres of land in St. Petersburg, Florida, stands a lynching memorial marker honoring Mr. John Evans, unveiled in February 2021. Evans was lynched in what is now known as the Historic Gas Plant District—a once-thriving Black community made up of several distinct neighborhoods. Today, the city faces difficult decisions about the future of this sacred and valuable land. After a 2024 hurricane (Milton) damaged the local baseball stadium and the resident team withdrew from a highly anticipated redevelopment plan, uncertainty looms. On June 3, 2025, Pinellas Remembers President Danny E. White was invited to table at a public event, representing the Coalition’s work and engaging with the community to better understand the path forward for the land surrounding the Evans marker.
